Satisfying, blue, structure, pleats, and powerful silhouettes… that was Mugler by Miguel Castro Freitas in his Fall/Winter 2026–27 presentation titled “The Commander.” In it, the designer seeks to deconstruct feminine clichés in order to generate new approaches to power dressing. The uniform becomes attitude, shoulders transform into declarations of strength, and skin becomes a powerful armor that defines the woman as a timeless icon—one who redefines her own codes day after day.

Mugler is one of those houses that feels iconic simply by existing, so this collection reads like a nostalgic chapter that revisits and reinterprets the work developed throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Padded shoulders appear throughout, extending outward until they sharply cut the silhouette at the hip. One of Freitas’ most successful moves was introducing electric blue as one of the connecting and central colors of the collection, demonstrating how the shade can act as both highlight and stylistic anchor within the looks.

The return of graphic prints on satin fabrics, paired with coats and dresses styled alongside contrasting tights and gloves, as well as the use of inverted triangle tailoring that amplifies the padded shoulder line, creates a retro-futuristic effect characteristic of Mugler. This visual language is further elevated by sharp leather handbags that feel perfectly suited for the display window—if the intention was to create statement pieces worthy of a showcase, the mission was accomplished.

References to the Mugler era naturally appear as well. Power suits with graphic zippers and striking bias details evoke the spirit of Fall/Winter 1986, yet feel contemporary thanks to cinched waists and the introduction of pleats in skirts and layered pieces. The result is a satisfying collection that continues the Mugler narrative while revealing strong potential for Miguel Castro Freitas’ future as creative director.
