Today we witnessed the first chapter of what promises to be a trilogy in the maison’s history. Not only was it the highly anticipated debut of Miguel Castro Freitas, it also marked Mugler’s long-awaited return to the headlines. With one eye on the past and the other on brutalism, the Spring/Summer 2026 Womenswear show unveiled: the rebirth of Mugler.

Set in a dust-covered parking lot, Freitas staged a powerful contrast between the raw backdrop and tailoring in muted pinks, greys, and beiges, where intricate corsetry emphasized the emblematic Mugler silhouette: broad shoulders, a cinched waist, and the transmutation of human into animal.

After years of merely looking back at the house’s legacy, we now enter a new era—one in which every look feels complete, from the palette to the references to Thierry-era runways. Each dress, coat, corset, and pair of trousers carries both history and a future aligned with the minimalism of today.

Freitas accomplished what few can in an age of debuts: finding the fine line that unites his own identity with the maison’s heritage—and he did so with great honors. The collection explored the concept of a “second skin,” confronted by a process of metamorphosis embodied in feathers and outerwear.

Leather, beading, and fringes revealed the body without shame, exalting femininity in a sensual, unapologetic dominatrix chic. Standouts included black leather ensembles and a reference to the iconic dress held up solely by the nipples. This was a coherent collection—and in that coherence lies its power: a true visual pleasure.

Mugler is back on the map thanks to Miguel Castro Freitas. The haute couture dominatrix house that once defined the female silhouette now merges with the precision tailoring and perfect finishes of its new creative director. There is no doubt we will be seeing much more of his vision in the future.
