MUBI is a platform, producer, and distributor that most of us are familiar with; the streaming service and purveyor of iconic tote bags (MUBI, please send us some) has become a staple for a certain niche of cinephiles—those who enjoyed The Substance (2024) and didn’t zone out during the last 30 minutes of the film.

With an impeccable track record and a growing reputation, bolstered by acquisitions like Luca Guadagnino’s Queer (2024), MUBI is taking a bold step into the publishing world, offering a “new” way to engage with the type of cinema that has hooked its audience.

MUBI Editions will focus on artistic dissemination, collaborating with designers from various disciplines to deliver works in diverse formats and genres. The first volume, titled Read Frame Type Film, will debut in April 2025 in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. “From credits to subtitles, intertitles, and beyond, text is a crucial element in a film's structure,” MUBI explains in a statement. “However, outside of conventional cinema, these textual—and visual—elements have often been overlooked. In Read Frame Type Film, curator Enrico Camporesi, design historian Catherine de Smet, and designer Philippe Millot aim to address this gap by focusing on the often-neglected field of experimental and artistic films.” The book is already available for pre-order on MUBI Editions' official website.

If you’re familiar with MUBI, you might know that this isn’t technically the platform’s first foray into publishing. Its Notebook line has been around for several years, expanding into a biannual magazine in 2021.

The new division’s releases will be divided into four main series, as outlined by the production company:

• Projections: books dedicated to the world of cinematic culture and history.
• Auteurs: books and artistic objects created in close collaboration with renowned artists and filmmakers.
• Internegatives: reissues of rare, out-of-print, or newly translated texts.
• Lights!: books that explore and expand on MUBI’s productions and releases.
