However, plans seem to have shifted slightly amid a wave of replacements and new hires across the industry—just yesterday, John Galliano and Maison Margiela announced their parting ways.

Blazy’s appointment comes six months after Virginie Viard stepped down as Chanel’s artistic director. Viard held the role for just over five years, during which she elevated the brand’s sales to unprecedented levels. Blazy is set to officially join Chanel in the first half of 2025, with his first collection debuting in October. Until then, he has some time to keep us in suspense and eager to witness his creative prowess.

“We have great confidence in Matthieu’s ability to bring modernity and a fresh approach to Chanel,” shared Bruno Pavlovsky, president of the French brand, about the recent hire. “His vision and talent will strengthen the brand’s energy and our position as leaders in the luxury sector,” added Alain Wertheimer, global executive chairman, and Leena Nair, global CEO of Chanel.

In an interview with WWD, Pavlovsky also expressed his hope for a long-term relationship with Blazy, who is in his forties, envisioning a collaboration lasting 10, 15 years, or even longer. The executive confirmed that the final decision came down to Blazy and “two other candidates,” but in the end, Blazy stood out. “Very quickly, we narrowed it down to three people we spoke with, but Matthieu immediately shone thanks to his career, his vision for Chanel, and a modernity that captivated us.”
