Back in 1992, Thomas Oaster, then-director of the Center for Men's Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, designated November 19 as International Men’s Day. Seven years later, in 1999, various global institutions officially recognized the date as a way to… ehm, acknowledge the contributions of men to society.
Fast forward to the present, and International Men’s Day has expanded its goals to include promoting positive male role models and raising awareness about men’s health issues (seriously, guys, there’s no shame in visiting your urologist for a prostate checkup or seeing a proctologist—this is the 21st century, for goodness’ sake).
Here are a few remarkable men who genuinely deserve a round of applause today:
KEANU REEVES
What’s left to say about Keanu? This actor has become an icon of positive masculinity and is one of the most beloved personalities in Hollywood.
ZIAUDDIN YOUSAFZAI
Malala Yousafzai’s father has been a tireless advocate for girls’ rights in Pakistan, even in the face of constant threats. Given that he raised Malala, words are hardly necessary to explain why he’s such an inspiring figure.
DAVID ATTENBOROUGH
David has dedicated his entire career to raising awareness about the importance of caring for our planet—a mission that grows more urgent by the day. Not even age has slowed his relentless advocacy.
JOSÉ ANDRÉS
Spanish chef José Andrés is not just a culinary genius. Through his organization, World Central Kitchen, founded in 2010, the Asturias-born chef has provided meals to countless communities affected by crises worldwide.
DONALD GLOVER
Few men in entertainment have used their influence as effectively as Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino. As a singer and actor, Glover has tackled numerous social issues that deeply resonate with today’s generations.
SHAH RUKH KHAN
Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan is a master of his craft and an ardent supporter of philanthropic causes, including empowering women in his country and providing opportunities for underprivileged children.
ELLIOT PAGE
By openly sharing his transition journey, Elliot Page has become a beacon of visibility, hope, and respect, as well as a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
FRANK OCEAN
Frank is one of those men born to shatter stereotypes. Through his authenticity, this singer and proud LGBTQ+ advocate has shown us that embracing every aspect of ourselves is a truly wonderful thing.
KAZUO ISHIGURO
The British-Japanese writer, Nobel Prize winner, and contemporary of Banana Yoshimoto and Haruki Murakami is renowned for his deeply ethical and spiritual novels that invite introspection. Fun fact: he met his wife, Lorna MacDougall, while they both worked at a homeless shelter.
GUILLERMO DEL TORO
What can we say about Guillermo del Toro that you don’t already know? This Mexican filmmaker is a beacon of kindness and inspiration. Not only does he smell like pancakes, but he has also championed countless causes, supported countless young people, and encouraged them to take their time conquering the world.
So today, celebrate the men who make a difference—those who inspire us to be better, stronger, and kinder.
And give that special man in your life a hug—he deserves it.
